Making the most of developments in the technology industry,
NHS has launched a digital tech lab
in Liverpool. It is testing space that will examine how the latest healthcare
systems can help patients at home. This will reduce the number of hospital
admissions.
It is called the Livernerds
Lab. It consists of a ‘Smart Room’ which simulates a hospital room and a
‘Smart House’ which replicates a regular house. Both spaces are adapted with
the latest digital equipment such as sensor technology, virtual reality and
telehealth. These services are supported by high-speed 5G connectivity.
Researchers are expecting that this technology will allow health professionals
to monitor important alterations to a person’s health. For instance, heart
rate, blood pressure and falls can be checked and recorded. Dr Paul
Fitzsimmons, deputy medical director at one the firms involved in this
development advanced that “Any changes will then trigger support and can
prevent an unnecessary hospital admission”. Moreover, in the future, this
infrastructure may be used to assist "patients who are ready to be
discharged from hospital”.
The Livernerds
Lab is the perfect place for people to work collaboratively so that
assistive technology can be developed for patients. It will be utilised as a location
giving local and international companies the opportunity to test products and
drive digital change in health and social care provision.
