Delivery bots: more details on FedEx’s system

As announced in a previous article, FedEx is planning to trial delivery bots in Manchester in summer if the project is approved. This system a mobile robot that processes same day deliveries.
Dean Kamen, the founder of DEKA Research & Development Corp., an institution that helped to develop this infrastructure asserted that “The bot has unique capabilities that make it unlike other autonomous vehicles”. It was designed using the power base of the iBot, an advanced, FDA-approved, mobility device for the disabled population. This system boasts more than 10 million hours of reliable, real-world operations.
Six major retailers have already signed out to test the delivery bots. Some of them are Walmart, Target, Walgreens and Lowe’s. FeDex’s robots will be able to carry packages as heavy as 100 pounds and to calculate the optimal route to its destination. It uses cameras and sensors to navigate and to avoid obstacles. Moreover, it will signal pedestrians, cyclists and motorists when it is stopping or turning.
Once the delivery bot reaches its destination, the person receiving the package will have to use a code sent to their mobile phone. This will enable them to open the device’s compartment to access their items. Additionally, the robot will be able to pick up products for returns as well.
