Revolutionising e-commerce,
FedEx has introduced delivery bots allowing you to receive your products on the
same day on which you have ordered. This system might soon be implemented in
Manchester.
As part of a presentation during a meeting of the Board of
Mayor, it was suggested that a trial of the system is rolled out in the City in
summer. Aldermen unanimously voted to authorise city officials to work with FedEX employees so that a pilot program
that adheres to the area’s regulations and ordinances is set up.
If it gets approval, the courier company will begin testing
the 4-foot, 2-inch-tall delivery robot. Powered by a battery, this system
travels at 10 miles an hour, has a range of 8 miles and can navigate streets,
sidewalks, curbs, potholes. It can even dodge pedestrians and take the steps up
someone’s front door.
FedEx developed this mobile robot with the help of DEKA
Research & Development Corp., a group founded by Dean Kamen, a Manchester
inventor. As such, the city was honoured of being the third location that tests
this system. The delivery
bot uses Deka’s iBot as platform. This is a motorised wheelchair
that can climb stairs and has more than 10 million miles of operations by users.
Delivery
bots will be tested in Manchester
