Competing with Amazon in terms of online shopping, Facebook has announced that it will implement new
features to WhatsApp, Instagram and its own Marketplace.
The social media giant advanced that its 2.4 billion users
will be able to browse products, get recommendations for celebrities, process
payments and add their shipping address without leaving these three apps. It
seems that the firm is relying on individuals’ connection to their friends and
family or their idols to increase online shopping penetration and to give its
service an advantage over other e-commerce marketplaces such Amazon or
eBay. These features are also an endorsement of Instagram’s thriving influencer
market. This involves online celebrities leveraging their fame with product
placements and endorsements.
Speaking at Facebook’s annual conference, the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri said that “future
of shopping" would depend on the sway of content "creators" as
well as just "brands and products”. For instance, maybe you look up to
someone because of the way they dress or other factors. As such, you will most
likely purchase items that they use or recommend. Mosseri advanced that “This
is an area where we think we can uniquely create value”. WhatsApp,
which is the most private service, will gain product catalogues and secure
payments.
