E-commerce: the impact of this technology in Luxembourg


Every year, there are several e-commerce events that take place in Luxembourg. Considering the fact that huge number of the country’s population use online platforms, these events are becoming increasingly popular.

According to its Statistics Portal, in 2018, 93 percent of households had access to the Internet. In the same year, 15 percent of these individuals used the Web to sell goods and services. Online shopping platforms give merchants the opportunity to target a wider audience. It was also reported that 62 percent of cosumers processed their most recent purchase on the Internet during the last three months before the survey was conducted.

Those living in Luxembourg can choose between several ways to complete payments when shopping online. According to a study from ‘E-commerce Foundation’, 39 percent of consumers preferred online banking, 34 percent opted for credit cards, 31 percent chose digicash and 30 percent used their debit cards. The analysis further revealed that this sector was worth 797 million euros in 2018. It is predicted that business-to-consumer e-commerce will grow to 869 million euros in 2019. This would be an increase of 9 percent. The most popular product bought online is tickets for shows and other events. This is followed by books and magazines and household items.
