By the end of this year, the business-to-consumer e-commerce market in the United Kingdom
is expected to reach more than 200 billion euros. This would imply that it will
increase by 14.6 percent in comparison to last year. In 2018, this sector was
worth almost 175 billion euros.
The ‘Ecommerce Foundation’ reported the above-mentioned
figures. During the last year, 95 percent of the British population were using
the Internet. In 2018, it is expected to grow to 96 percent. The analysis
further reveals that these millions of consumers will generate more than 200
billion euros worth of online sales by the end of the year. This is a
huge increase in comparison to the last couple of years.
If these figures are obtained by December 2019, this would
mean that almost 8 percent of the country’s gross domestic product consists of
e-commerce sales. In 2015, this share was only 5.2 percent. The ‘E-commerce
Foundation’ estimates that 87 percent of those using the Internet is expected
to use e-shopping services this year.
Moreover, the annual amount of money spent per e-shopper
has considerably increased. In 2015, the average amount spent online was 2,515
euros. Last year, it increased to 3,254 euros and this year, according to the
report, the average consumer will spend 3,620 euros.
