Recently, the Federal Communications Commission voted that mobile carriers have the ability to
block robocalls, non pre-approved numbers, by default to protect the elderly
and the rest of the population from phone calls in the middle of the night,
deceptive caller IDs and spoofing. These are disruptive and encourage online
telemarketing.
However, major carriers have not disclosed anything about
their plans to implement the protective
measures. Telecommunication companies were already offering some form of
protection against robocalls. Nonetheless, users had to opt for these services.
With the new regulations, firms will be able to block these calls for all their
subscribers, regardless of whether they have added the protections or not.
According to the FCC, robocalls are a huge problem for
everyone with a cellphone. They are the number one coustomer complaint (more
than 60%) received by the telecom regulator. It asserted “And when consumers complain to
us, they don’t distinguish between illegal calls, scam calls, telemarketing
calls and spoofed calls. They simply lump them together under one category:
unwanted”. The firm further advanced that they expect phone companies to move
quickly and implement new ways to help consumers block robocalls.
This will also help telco companies by reducing the costs of handling these
calls.
