A while back, Amazon
announced that it is planning to open 3,000 Amazon Go grocery that will be
equipped with cashier-less technology.
However, only 16 have been introduced. It is expected that two more
outlets will open soon.
Ever since the launch of its first retail outlet, the
e-commerce giant has been focussing a lot on physical retail. Now it is
considering leasing its cashier-free
technology to other partners such as movie theatres or airport shops. This
innovative system has completely transformed the retail landscape. Waiting in
lines to settle bills has always been a tiring activity for shoppers and a
cashier can be quite costly for retailers. A cashier-free infrastructure might
be the perfect solution for everyone.
However, Amazon’s technology is quite expensive. It takes
approximately $1 million to build one of the small, 1,500-square-foot Go stores.
This is because it is equipped with cameras and artificial intelligence
and machine learning systems. These are important to ensure a smooth and rapid
process. Despite that, other firms are also testing this infrastructure. One example
is the supermarket chain Giant Eagle. Additionally, Caper is offering smart
shopping carts, Tesco supermarkets are testing cashier-less technology and
retailers such as Walmart
and 7-Eleven are expanding the availability of scan-and-go technology.
