Retail sector: predictions for 2020

The retail sector has considerably changed throughout the past few years with traditional stores implementing new technologies to compete in this digital era. While it is difficult to forecast the future of this industry, experts have tried to predict what 2020 holds.

Walmart’s growth will be slower
The retail giant has experienced a huge growth with both its online and physical business. It has 3000 brick-and-mortar stores and a grocery business with an already established infrastructure. Several of its sales have been conducted through the BOPIS concept and via deliveries from store inventories and distribution centres. However, in 2020, it will see a slowdown in its growth as other retailers, such as Amazon, are going to work on growing their business.

The e-commerce giant has been experimenting with grocery shopping. However, it will be difficult for it to build its own super brand and even Whole Foods will not be enough to compete with Walmart. This leaves experts to believe that it is going to purchase a major grocery chain. There are rumours going on that it will be investing in a national or nearly national chain and will rebrand everything under the name ‘Amazon Prime’. The right candidate, according to analysts, is Kroger.
