Augmented reality: more uses in the fashion and retail industry

As advanced in a previous article, augmented reality is being utilised by several fashion retailers to offer customers more innovative ways to purchase clothes. For instance, ASOS has just introduced the ‘See My Fit’ app.

Gap is another brand that is making use of this technology. It launched an AR-based system called “DressingRoom by Gap”. This application gives users the opportunity to browse for clothes by styles. Moreover, they can choose from five different body types that will help buyers actually see how the clothes would fit on them. In a statement, the company has advanced that “the fashion industry has not traditionally been geared toward helping people understand how clothes will actually fit”. Thus, it is determined to deliver products that make customers look great.

However, ASOS and Gaps are not the first firms to use this innovative tech. In 2015, Oak Labs developed the Oak Mirror. This is an augmented reality interactive display for fitting rooms. It acts as both a touch screen and a mirror. The dual-functionality feature allows shoppers to request garments in different sizes, colours. Other retailers such as Topshop and Uniqlo have also leveraged the smart mirror technology. Moreover, beauty brands such as Saks Fifth Avenue’s beauty floor and Sephora have introduced systems that let buyers virtually try on makeup.
