E-shopping: Google has a new tool in the search section

Fans of e-shopping will be pleased to learn that Google is launching a new tool in its search results page to make it easier for consumers to look for popular products.

Now, when you type in a keyword such as ‘running shoes’ in the search bar, a new section will pop up. It will feature popular products from stores across the Web. However, it will only appear when consumers are looking for specific types of items. The categories involved are clothes, shoes and accessories. Moreover, this new feature allows those browsing to filter results according to style, department and size. After shoppers select an item, Google will list the e-commerce sites from where they can be purchased which will allow them to compare prices easily. They can also read reviews without leaving the search results. However, they will have to visit the retailer’s website to complete a purchase.

As for merchants, if they wish to have their items featured in the ‘popular products’ section, they will have to set up product feeds in Google Merchant Center and/or apply the appropriate structured data markup to product pages. The tech giant advanced that this new feature will help drive organic traffic to sellers’ sites. However, this remains to be seen.
