Aldi launched its first e-commerce store in the UK

For the first time ever, the German discount chain Aldi is opening an online shop in the UK. This move is a response to the increase in demands following the coronavirus pandemic. The e-commerce store is going to offer customers essential products during this crisis.

The company advanced that the main objective of this online shopping solution is “to support consumers in high-risk groups during the pandemic”. On the website, clients will be able to purchase boxes with 22 basic (non-refrigerated) products. These contain essential items such as pasta, disinfectant soap and toilet paper. Customers can benefit from a delivery service as well.

The boxes available on the e-commerce website are being marketed at 24.99 pounds each, including shipping fees. Aldi’s corporate responsibility director Fritz Walleczek advanced, “We are committed to providing quick, safe and affordable access to food for all our customers and understand that, for some, visiting one of our stores is not an option at the moment".

For quite some time, there have been several rumours that the company is moving towards e-commerce in various European markets, but these turned out to be just speculations, until now. In the US, Aldi is already collaborating with Instacart to offer home delivery services for groceries.
