Grocery shopping and Covid-19: what about the future?

Despite the fact that several aspects of our daily life have been disturbed by the coronavirus pandemic, grocery shopping has been a constant. People are always in need of food and other pantry products.

In fact, sales at supermarkets have increased by 25% in March. However, there is a change in the products that consumers have been buying. According to Michael Nestrud, a Boston R&D consultant for the food industry, shoppers are now opting for comfort items such as soups and canned beans from trusted brands like Campbell’s and Heinz. He advanced that in times of anxiety, people reach out for food that reminds them of childhood. If this trend lasts, it could be a huge benefit for brands that have been struggling since the emergence of organic items and health awareness among clients. On the other hand, smaller upstart firms might have some troubles.

The pandemic has also resulted in an increase in grocery deliveries. However, this tech might not stick after the pandemic. This is because a lot of customers have advanced that they found online shopping facilities frustrating and inefficient. Moreover, stores have to deal with additional costs to manage and support home delivery and curbside pickup. However, the BOPIS (Buy Online Pick up In Store) model might maintain its popularity.
