Grocery shopping: the UK issues guidelines on customer behaviour

To make grocery shopping safer, the UK has issued guidelines on how customers should behave. The country’s Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has collaborated with Environmental Health Association of Ireland (EHAI) and the Irish Global Health Network (IGHN) to write a rule-book that stipulates safety measures related to everything that you should do before, during and after buying items to protect yourself.

First of all, children must not be brought to supermarkets and shops. You should also avoid crowds and you must not visit the store during peak times. A lot grocers have established dedicated times so that the elderly can purchase products without increased risks. Special arrangements have been made for NHS workers as well.

Before visiting the store, you must make an inventory of the products that you already have at home. This will help you avoid wastage of both food and money which is currently crucial. After that, make a list and ensure that you have enough essential items to last you until your next shopping trip. This should be limited to once a week.

To reduce human contact, make sure that you respect social distancing rules. Avoid touching surfaces as far as possible and it is best to utilise contactless payment services if these are available. You are also advised to bring your own sanitiser.
