Aldi introduces traffic lights to manage queues

Several retailers are introducing additional security measures to make sure that shoppers are able to buy products safely. Aldi has implemented an innovative system. It is using traffic lights to manage the number of customers going in and out of its outlets.

This method is being tested in a handful of stores and then, after a week, it will be rolled out across the country. How will it work? The traffic lights are going to signal when a client can enter the supermarket. It will take into account factors such as individual customer limits that are in line with two-metre social distancing guidelines. Since more consumers are able to leave their home to purchase groceries, this system will help the firm follow rules specified by the government.

This traffic lights infrastructure is going to operate alongside other security measures that are already in place at all Aldi stores. For instance, there are protective screens at checkouts, distancing markers on shop floors and sanitisation stations for customers.

Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi, advanced, “The system’s trial was well received by our customers and we will be gradually rolling this new social distancing measure out nationwide from this week”. However, the firm reminded that priority access for NHS workers remain in place.
