Adobe Analytics’ April e-commerce
report has revealed new details regarding online shopping behaviour. As
expected, the number of transactions processed on the Web has significantly
increased. The firm also disclosed record-breaking sales logged for buy online,
pick up in store (BOPIS) orders.
Consumers have been buying all sorts of items on the
Internet and apparel retailers, which have been facing issues because of the
forced closure of their retail outlets, have been trying to leverage this
situation in their favour. For instance, many have introduced discounts to
encourage online shopping. The drop
in prices is of the same level as Black Friday promotions. It seems as if that
customers can keep expecting these discounts in May and June also since
retailers are going to swap out seasonal products. In April, retail prices on
the Web were 12% lower than they were in March. Thanks to this decrease, online
apparel merchants saw a 34% year-over-year sales increase in the month.
However, with regards to groceries,
the situation is different; prices have considerably grown. Adobe
suggests that shelf-stable processed foods are getting more expensive due to
increased customer demand. The firm’s director advanced that these shifts “mean
that consumers, retailers and policymakers all need to re-evaluate the trends
that they were previously relying on”.
