It cannot be denied that the coronavirus pandemic has driven
several changes. There has been a shift towards digital services, customers are
cooking from scratch and are buying more casual clothing. According to the
owner of Marks & Spencer, shopping
habits have been transformed forever.
Steve Rowe advanced that consumers “may never shop the same
way again”, even after the pandemic is over. The retail company revealed that
online sales for T-shirts and bathroom products have increased whereas suits or
ties are barely being sold. Moreover, e-shoppers were browsing e-commerce sites earlier in the day, between
15:00 and 17:00. It has also noticed that desktop visits have grown by 38% in
comparison with the same period last year. This is due to the fact that more
people are now working from home.
With regards to
groceries, Marks & Spencer has found out that since consumers can no
longer visit shops whenever they want to, they are planning what to eat well in
advance and they are purchasing more herbs and whole vegetables. Additionally, customers
are buying bigger product packs, such as big bags of strawberries and chicken.
Sales of frozen items have also gone up by 75% in the UK.
According to an analyst, the change in consumer trends “may
just be the catalyst required to accelerate Marks
& Spencer's transformation into a 21st-century retailer”.
