According to a survey conducted recently, those using online shopping facilities return 70%
of the clothing they order, more than any other category of purchase. While
this is an issue for the retailer, it also has a direct impact on the
environment.
Very often, people buying on the Web get multiple sizes and
colours because they intend to send back those that do not fit or do not look
good after trying them on at home. This is an activity usually known as “bracket shopping”. Thanks to development
in technology and the introduction of augmented reality, there might be a
solution to this issue. This system allows shoppers to see an image of
themselves wearing the clothes that they are interested to buy.
A new research has revealed that the use of AR by
clothing retailers motivates customers to complete a purchase. While the tool
is not as effective as a fitting room allowing someone to physically try on a
garment, it definitely boosts online shoppers’ attitude towards the product. As
such, augmented
reality enhances the experience and efficiency of e-shopping and may
decrease ‘bracket purchases’ which increase shelving and shipping costs. A
research expert advanced “We’re hoping these technologies can reduce those
costs, while also decreasing the carbon footprint associated with return
shipping”.
