Many experts are predicting that online shopping will keep being popular among consumers even after
the lockdown is over. The grocer Ocado is confirming these claims by saying
that the switch to digital services has led to a "permanent
redrawing" of the retail landscape.
The online grocer has revealed that its sales during the
first half of 2020 jumped by 27% to more than £1bn. In just a few months, there
has been a huge surge in the e-grocery market and according to the firm’s chief
executive Tim Steiner “we won't be going back”. He advanced that Ocado has now become the fastest growing
grocer in the UK thanks to a 50/50 partnership with Marks and Spencer. This
deal was announced last year and it saw M&S take a half-share in the firm's
retail business. As from September, when its deal with Waitrose expires, Ocado
will start delivering grocery products from Marks and Spencer.
A senior investment manager advanced that despite the fact
that there is evidence that many shoppers will keep buying their groceries on
the Web even when lockdown measures have been completely lifted, “it will be
difficult for Ocado
to maintain the sales registered at the peak of the crisis”. Nevertheless, it
is in a good position for the future.
