It seems as if Primark
has now another reason to become UK customers’ favourite place to shop. The
firm has announced that it is rolling out a recycling programme that will allow
clients to donate their clothes, footwear and bags. These will be reused,
recycled or repurposed.
The company has revealed that any brand of pre-loved
clothes, textiles, footwear and bags can be deposited at collection boxes which
are placed in its 190 stores across the UK. Thanks to the Primark In-Store Recycling Scheme, nothing will be sent to landfill.
All items will be reused, recycled or repurposed and profits will go to UNICEF
to support its education programmes for vulnerable children around the world.
To introduce this scheme, Primark has collaborated with Yellow
Octopus. As many donations as possible will be worn again and the remainder
of the items will be repurposed into new products such as insulation, toy
stuffing and mattress fillers.
The clothing store has advanced that this move is its latest
step in its wider Primark Cares initiative.
This features schemes such as the expansion of its Sustainable Cotton Programme
and investment in the use of sustainable fibres across all product ranges. The
firm’s sustainability director Katherine Stewart said, “We know people don’t
always find it easy to recycle their clothes, textiles and shoes. And we know
people have had big clear outs during lockdown”.
