As advanced in a previous article, online shopping websites have reported that sales of used goods
have exponentially increased during the lockdown. More and more people are buying
secondhand items such as clothes or those in home and garden categories.
This was revealed by sites like eBay, Depop or even Oxfam which said that purchases on its online
shop grew by 111% last week, in comparison to the same time-frame the previous
year. According to experts, several factors led to this surge. For instance,
since stores were closed, people had to buy on the Web, there are restrictions
on family budgets since jobs have been lost or wages have been cut and we are
going through a growing trend for recycling because of ethical reasons.
Speaking about this, Emma Grant at eBay, said, “It seems
that [the] lockdown ultimately sped up the transition to a greater
sustainability-conscious society”. She advanced that this trend is mostly being
driven by Gen-Z, those in their teens and early twenties. Sales of their
preferred vintage brand, such as Champion and Fila, grew by more than
40%.
This shift towards secondhand shopping is becoming so
popular that even department stores like Selfridges, John
Lewis and Liberty have been “flirting” with resale ideas.
