Digital revolution: UK Govt. disburses £29 million

We are in the middle of a digital revolution and to help speed things up, the UK government is disbursing a lot of money into the tech sector. This money will fund six research centres across the country and will enhance online security and privacy.

£29m will be dedicated to projects in Bristol, Bath, Newcastle, Nottingham, Surrey and Lancaster and £7m of this is for a new online safety research centre of excellence which will work on improving several issues linked to cybersecurity. This investment is being made by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and it is going to explore how immersive technology can ameliorate people’s education and the way Internet of Things can enhance individuals' lives and well-being.

With regards to cybersecurity, the money will be used to build a new National Research Centre on Privacy, Harm Reduction and Adversarial Influence online (REPHRAIN). This will see experts from the universities of Bristol, Edinburgh, Bath, King’s College London and UCL and other academics to develop innovative technologies that help human moderators tackle the spread of disinformation on the Web. They will also help identify harms linked to online targeting and manipulation. To trial new ways to boost data privacy, the centre will design a world-first Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) test site.
