Job Support Scheme announced to help workers in winter

As announced in a previous article, a series of measures will be introduced by the government for people in the difficult times ahead. One of them is a Job Support Scheme. This is a program to protect viable jobs in businesses who will be experiencing lower demands in the upcoming months.

Coming into effect as from the 1st of November, it will run for six months to keep employees attached to the workforce. This plan involves the government contributing towards the wages of people who will work fewer hours. How is it going to function? The employer is going to be responsible for the payment of the time worked. For the remaining minutes, he and the government will each pay one third of the worker’s equivalent salary.

To put it simpler, employees will go to work on decreased hours and they will still be remunerated for two-thirds of the hours that they have not worked for. Nonetheless, there is a maximum limit to the grant being offered. It will be capped at £697.92 per month.

This project will be open to businesses across the UK and it is going to be available alongside the Jobs Retention Bonus. Thus, a firm can benefit from both schemes to help protect jobs. As for self-employed individuals, they can take advantage of an extension of the Self Employment Income Support Scheme Grant.
