Asda has a new ‘sustainable’ supermarket

The supermarket company Asda has a new store based on sustainability in Middleton, just outside Leeds. It has just opened its doors.

In this outlet, shoppers are able to refill their personal container with common household products from 30 brands such as Kellogg's, PG Tips and Vimto. Asda’s own brand of pasta and rice can be purchased in this way as well. Besides food items, popular shampoo, conditioner, Persil detergent and Radox shower gel can be acquired in the refill zone. You just need to take a jar, bag or any other container that you find convenient and fill it with the goods that you would like. The aim behind this store is to reduce plastic and limit waste.

Moreover, to encourage customers to be more eco-friendly, the firm has launched a "Greener at Asda Price" promise. This states that loose products will not cost more than packaged ones. Speaking about these new initiatives, Roger Burnely, Asda's CEO and president, said, “Today marks an important milestone in our journey as we tackle plastic pollution and help our customers to reduce, re-use and recycle”.

Waitrose is another supermarket having such a scheme. It has refill stations for key products in four branches: Oxford Botley road, Cheltenham, Walingford and Abingdon.
