UK high streets: more retailers that had to close down permanently

As advanced in a previous article, several retailers on the UK high streets, like Beales and TM Lewin, have had to close down all of their physical stores in 2020. This post will look at more brands that will not see 2021.

Mothercare
This brand sells health, beauty and baby items. It established itself in the industry 59 years ago and this year, after failing to secure a rescue deal, it had to close down all of its 79 outlets, which led to the loss of 2500 jobs. Nonetheless, Mothercare still retails its products in the UK via Boots stores and it has a franchise operation overseas.

Carphone Warehouse
In March this year, the tech giant Dixons Carphone decided to sacrifice its Carphone Warehouse chain in the UK by closing down all of its retail outlets. This move affected 531 stores and 3000 workers! The company advanced that 1800 of the employees impacted will be given new roles within the business. However, the firm’s 70 stores in Ireland are open and its international operations are still going on.

Evans
This is the first brand of the Arcadia group to be bought out of its administration process earlier this month. The giant was acquired by the Australian group City Chic for £23 million. However, this deal did not include its brick and mortar business. Thus, Evans could not reopen its five remaining UK stores.
