Asda is testing a vegan butcher concept

To further boost its plant-based credentials, Asda has decided to test a new idea. The grocery company has advanced it will trial a vegan butcher concept at its Watford store. Moreover, it will also expand its own-label range for Veganuary.

This new counter is called ‘Veelicious’ and it opened on the 4th of January. Customers will be able to purchase a wide variety of products such as meat-free lamb, black pudding and base cooking sauces. Prices for these start as from 75p. This project is a result of a collaboration with London-based vegan concept creator Kbox Global and it will be tested for an initial period of six months. According to Asda, this counter will be a ‘test and learn’ trial to help them understand what resonates with customers so that they can enhance their plant-based proposition. For quite some time, Asda has noticed an interest for vegan products among clients. For instance, searches for this term rose 175% year on year across the whole of 2020.

The grocery company has also announced a 22-strong line-up of own-label chilled, frozen and ambient plant-based NPD for Veganuary. This has already been rolled out in Asda stores and it is an addition to its vegan range which was first launched in January 2020.
