A first in the UK, Morrisons has announced a new wage for its workers. The firm has revealed that it will pay staff members a minimum of £10 an hour. This new deal will become applicable as from April.
The current minimum amount being given to employees right now is £9.20 per hour. This announcement follows a research published by social justice charity Citizens UK. It showed that 45% of supermarket workers now earn below the real living wage of £10.85 an hour in London and £9.50 across the rest of the UK. This tariff is recommended by the Living Wage Foundation. Looking at the earnings of people in 2020, it also showed supermarket workers were among the worst employers in terms of pay ratio between top earners and medium-earning workers.
Speaking about this report, shadow business secretary Ed
Miliband said that everyone should be paid a fair wage that they can live on
and that it is just wrong that so many of our key workers, including those in
the supermarket and care sectors, are being asked to survive on low pay. Thus,
this deal by Morrisons
is quite welcome. It is a step forward towards making sure that those providing
us an essential service are able to earn a decent wage.
