Last year, a Korean media company reported that Apple wrote a memorandum of
understanding with Kia to collaborate on several projects that will be rolled
out across eight different sectors. In January this year, its parent
organisation Hyundai revealed that it was working on a deal that would see its
subsidiary manufacture what was named an “Apple Car”. However, after a
firestorm from the media, it quickly took back the statement.
Additionally, in February, both Kia and Hyundai advanced that they were not considering creating an “Apple
Car” anymore. As such, it was thought that electric vehicles are no longer in
the picture. These fell into one of the categories included into the original
memorandum of understanding. Nonetheless, a report recently disclosed indicates
that there might be still hope for a partnership between the car manufacturer
and the tech giant. It states that even if the electric vehicles project
falls through, there are still other opportunities to explore.
The report further advances that Apple and Kia
are discussing "last mile" mobility. This focusses on the final leg
of travel between a person’s means of transportation and a destination. This
category includes things such as electric scooters and rental bikes. What this
collaboration will bring remains to be seen.
