According to the latest estimates, drones might become the mainstream delivery channel by 2040. As new
technologies and network scales bring down related costs, these could account
for one-third of same-day package drop-offs within the next 20 years. With the
coronavirus lockdown and firms adopting innovative tech, these figures make
sense.
While there are concerns about security and privacy issues,
new evidence shows that drone technology will be worth billions to the national
economy in the near-future. For instance, PwC
conducted a research which demonstrates that by 2030, the skies above us will
change. Rather that the swarm of private toys that we can find there today,
there will be a highly coordinated hive of more than 76,000 sophisticated
drones conducting different tasks.
Moreover, L.E.K Consulting released a report which
advanced that there will be considerable expansion in the drone industry. An
exact market share is going to depend on how transport operators configure
their networks. It will be based on the comparative cost of transporting goods
through road-based methods as well. However, it also said that it is unlikely
that they will replace traditional trucking. Instead, the latter will be
enhanced with new tech such as remote pilots or autonomous
technology. Firms are already looking into these systems.
