Snappy Shopper attracts the interest of Sainsbury’s ex-boss

Several new services emerged during the pandemic to fulfil the needs of online shoppers. One of them is Snappy Shopper and this start-up has captured the attention of Justin King, Sainsbury’s former boss. He has taken a stake in the venture.

The grocery delivery app has become quite popular during the lockdown. It delivers items from local convenience stores to clients’ house within 30 minutes. There are several other services like this on the market. For instance, Deliveroo works in the same way for big supermarkets. Snappy Shopper has partnered with shops such as Spar, Nisa and Costcutter. Consumers using its mobile app or website will be redirected to the nearest local participant. The delivery fee is £1.95. The benefit of this start-up is that it covers a large part of the UK, in contrast to its rivals which serve only parts of London and selected cities. The firm does not employ any drivers. All orders are sent by the partner stores.

After making a “significant personal investment” in this venture, King has taken the role of senior advisor at the Snappy Group. He was the chief executive of Sainsbury's between 2004 and 2014. Moreover, the firm advanced that when its current fundraising round is over, he would take on the role of non-executive director.
