The supermarket company Tesco
is testing out a new idea. The firm is trialling restaurant-style meal boxes
that are available online or in 215 stores.
There are three types of these packages. Called the Finest “Restaurant Collection” range,
the boxes contain ingredients for a main course meal for two. There is also a
snack and an instruction card to make sure that you can make a dish worthy of a
restaurant at home. Considering that people have been spending a lot of time without
leaving their house because of the lockdown and they cannot go to restaurants
to even celebrate special occasions, Tesco thought that this might be a good
idea to bring some excitement to mealtimes and offer an alternative to eating
out. As such, buyers can get chicken or confit duck boxes for £20 and £25 for
the ox cheek option.
During the lockdown, the meal kit market has considerably
boomed. Its value was estimated to be £350-400 million per year before the
outbreak of the coronavirus and post-lockdown, it is estimated to be worth £700
million.
Ben Sherburn, head of brand at Tesco
Finest, said: “With restaurants still closed and many celebrating
their second birthday or anniversary in lockdown, we were keen to capitalise on
the moment and offer our customers something special at home”.
