Online shopping after shop re-openings

The increase in online shopping during the coronavirus pandemic was unprecedented. More and more people turned towards digital solutions. Have things changed since lockdown restrictions have eased?

According to a study, 36% of those buying on the Web shopped more frequently during the lockdown and 49% of those aged over 65 increased their online shopping. However, the opposite behaviour was noticed among 28% of those who are aged between 18 and 24 years old. The research has also disclosed that even if lockdown restrictions have eased, 63% are keeping their habit of purchasing on the Web. What’s more, 15% have increased the frequency at which they do so.

As such, it seems that the majority of those in the UK have become used to e-commerce and the convenience and ease that it offers. Some won’t be lured back to the high streets even after the reopening of shops.

However, since there are brands (Primark and others) that do not have an online outlet many might prefer to shop in-store again and e-commerce merchants may experience a dip in sales. So what can they do? What strategies can retailers implement to ensure that consumers keep purchasing from them instead of just flocking to the nearest high street?
