As advanced in a previous article, Amazon is working on two robots, Ernie and Bert, that will increase
the safety for its employees. They will move carts and packages in warehouses.
Right now, the e-commerce giant is testing the machine. It
is gathering quantitative data on its performance from the lab. Moreover, it is
seeking feedback from those who are working with the new equipment during the
trial. One of its employees working in the Seattle area research and innovation
lab, said that Ernie was “working out well in the testing and it was safer”.
Bert is also being tested. It is one of the company’s first Autonomous Mobile Robots, or AMRs. This
one is similar to a cart with multiple shelves. Employees will be able to
summon it to carry items across the warehouse. Moreover, they will have the
capacity to carry heavier items in the future.
Besides Ernie and Bert, two other robots, called,
“Scooter” and “Kermit” also work autonomously in Amazon warehouses. These are transport
carts. The firm advanced that it is planning to deploy the former to at least
one Amazon
facility this year. The e-commerce giant said that these robots will allow
employees to focus on jobs that require more critical thinking.
