Cashless stores: the growth of ‘Just Walk Out’ shops in the UK

The concept of cashless stores was introduced by the giant Amazon in the US. Now, a lot of other firms are trying out this technology. Indeed, the ‘Just Walk Out’ shop has proven to be beneficial when it comes to digital investments.

That the why the four leading supermarkets in the UK are looking into this. However, currently, this model is available at high street stores only; not superstores. There are mixed opinions on this project. Sachin Jangam, Partner for Retail at Infosys Consulting, argues that there are still some issues related to economics that have to be sorted out. He advances that these outlets have a reduced product range, high rental costs and they require significant investment. According to him, ‘Just Walk Out’ shops will remain in a trial period for the next few years before massive roll-outs are conducted. This is because besides the technological aspects, firms also have to be mindful of the profitability of adopting such a model.

Nonetheless a lot of companies in the UK are testing this cashierless system. Some of them are Morrisons, Tesco, Amazon Fresh and Imagr. Keep reading the articles posted on this blog to learn more about the facilities that they have rolled out.
