FinTok: the use of TikTok for financial literacy

While many consider TikTok to be waste of time, the video-sharing platform is not just that. There are several short informative clips that have helped users. In fact, there is a trend called FinTok which is dedicated to financial videos that teach young users how to better use their money.

This space is growing across the world on the application. Content with the hashtag #stocktok has been seen 1.4bn times and #PersonalFinance has amassed more than 4.4bn views. These clips are on several topics related to the financial industry. They cover subjects such as budgeting, debts, taxes and others. The reach of these videos is the most impressive part. They are being watched by young people who would have otherwise been uninterested with personal finance. Thanks to these clips, individuals are more careful with their money. Some are even learning about how to invest.

According to experts, for many millennial and Gen-Z users, TikTok is their only source of education on these matters. The investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown showed that 46% of 18- to 34-year-olds have become more interested in investing over the past six months and one in five advanced that the reason behind this is TikTok. As such, the social media app is proving to be quite useful to users.
