Following on its eco-friendly measures to reduce carbon
emissions, Aldi has announced
another change. The firm is installing fridge doors as standard in its new and
recently refurbished stores.
According to Aldi, this move is going to reduce each
outlet’s energy consumption by 20%, which will save the equivalent of over
2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year. Before implementing it at all stores,
it conducted a trial which was a success.
For quite some time already, the firm has been trying to
minimise its carbon emissions and climate impact. Since 2012, it has been able
to reduce carbon footprint by more than 55% via the introduction of a number of
sustainability initiatives. For instance, it has been using solar panels, it
switched to 100% green electricity
and it invested in a greener fleet. Moreover, it has been carbon neutral since January
2019.
Speaking about this move, Mary Dunn, Managing Director of
Corporate Responsibility at Aldi
UK, said, “We are always looking for new ways to minimise our carbon footprint,
which is why all our stores already use 100% renewable electricity, and our new
stores also utilise natural refrigerants and feature efficient LED
lighting”. Now, the fridge doors aim to reduce energy consumption and to offer
customers a more sustainable shopping experience.
