According to recent data by Royal Mail, the online shopping trend will remain the same.
This is demonstrated by the growth in home delivery. Indeed, there is a
considerable increase in the number of parcels being processed. In contrast,
there is a decline in letters.
The postal operator
has revealed that between April and June, which is the first trading quarter of
its financial year, its UK domestic business handled 326 million parcels. This
number is 7 percent lower than the same period last year. During that time
frame, 352 packages were handled. However, we must take into the consideration
the fact that we were during the lockdown period and that people could not go
out to stores. As such, this comparison does not seem to be a fair one. Thus,
data recorded in 2019, which shows a 35% growth, seems to be more accurate.
In another news, Royal
Mail has announced that it is going through a transformation of its
business. It is planning to scrap post on Saturdays. However, this would need
changes to existing regulations. The current requirement is that the post
operates 6 days a week. Nonetheless, according to bosses, this rule is outdated
and it leaves the firm at a disadvantage in comparison to rivals such as DHL
and Amazon.
