WhatsApp is testing affectionate emojis!

Things just got cuter for WhatsApp users. Indeed, the Unicode Consortium has a recent update called Emoji 13.1. This involves the creation of 217 new symbols and these are slowly making their way to end users like us. For instance, they can already be accessed by people using Gboard and iOS.

Now, those having Android devices and using WhatsApp will also be able to access them. Typically, the messaging app designs its own set of emoji based on the consortium’s list. Now, it is rolling out the 13.1 set with the beta version 2.21.16.10 of the messaging app. Many of the new emojis are coded as sequences to those that previously existed. For instance, there is a woman with beard or a face in the clouds.

Nonetheless, it should be noted that since this move is still in its beta-phase, there are a lot of updates to be done to it. For example, WhatsApp has not yet applied the different skin tones modifier to this new set. Indeed, it features a ‘Kiss’ and ‘Couple’ series which involves people kissing or standing in front of a heart. While users are able to customise the combination of sexes, this can be done in the default yellow skin tone only.
