The e-commerce giant Amazon
has been making its mark into the physical retail business for quite a while
now. It already has grocery and gadget shops.
According to reports, it now plans to expand by opening
several large bricks-and-mortar retail sites that are similar to department
stores in the US. At the time of writing, Amazon has refused to comment on
these claims. That is why the Wall Street
Journal is speaking about rumours and speculations. Nonetheless, the same
media outlet advanced that Ohio and California have been earmarked as probable
locations.
People that are supposed to be involved in the project
advanced that the new retail spaces will be around 30,000 square feet.
This is smaller than typical department stores which usually occupy
approximately 100,000 square feet. While we do not know much about the brands
that Amazon will stock on yet, it is expected to offer items from top consumer
brands and its private-label goods.
Neil Saunders, managing director of retail analysts
GlobalData, advanced that this project by Amazon will most
probably be a success because it will be in locations with good footfall. He
said, “Amazon knows that the future of retail is multichannel... most consumers
still shop using a combination of stores and online”.
