Tesco trials a zero-waste concept at 10 of its stores

Caring for the environment and aware of the damage caused by plastic, Tesco is testing a new concept at 10 of its stores in the East of England. It is a zero-waste shopping service which will allow customers to purchase common household items in reusable packaging. These can be returned to the store again. This project follows the success of a year-long online pilot which allowed customers to order products and return packaging from their doorsteps.

Tesco is trying to meet demands for less single-use plastic packaging. It advances that if customers at the 10 stores were to switch just three products in their weekly shop, the packaging would be used and reused more than two-and-a-half million times a year. 88 popular products can be bought under this scheme. Some of them are Persil washing up powder, Fever-Tree drinks and mixers, Carex handwash, Tetley Tea and BrewDog beers. The supermarket company has also added 5 of its own-brand essential foodstuff products, such as pasta, rice, oil and sugar, to the trial.

It should be noted that the regular version of these products, that is, items with single-use packaging like plastic, cardboard, glass and Tetra Paks, will still be available at the Tesco stores.
