As advanced in a previous article, Amazon has opened a non-food physical
store in the UK. While there are already 30 of those in the US, Andy Jones, the
director of the project has declined to say how many more outlets will open in
the United Kingdom.
Very often, the e-commerce giant is
accused of causing harm to the high street
by undercutting traditional retailers and paying less tax and now, it is moving
on the retail sector as well. Indeed, this is not the first physical outlet by
the firm. It already has six grocery convenience stores that are equipped with
checkout-free technology in the country.
However, a retail expert, Natalie
Berg advanced that this move is “purely about experimentation” and that its aim
is to encourage more online shopping. She advanced that this decision is
not about shifting more product, but instead, it is going to bait shoppers into
Amazon's ecosystem. How so? Well, consumers will engage with the e-commerce
giant’s devices and Prime users will be reminded of the value of their
memberships. Moreover, they have additional choice when it comes to collection
and returns of online orders.
Now, it remains to be seen how efficiently
and successfully the e-commerce giant Amazon
is going to go about running retail stores.
