There is some good news for merchants and marketers. Twitter has announced another form of
advertisement that gives more exposure to products and services. There will be
a new placement option. Indeed, ads can be posted within the reply threads of
tweets.
Bruce Falck, Twitter Revenue Product Lead, posted an example
of this system on the platform which showed that promotions will be displayed
within the first few replies of a tweet. As per the announcement, this is “right
where the conversation is happening”. This option is currently being tested. As
such, only certain users will see the promoted
posts. Twitter said that this trial is in its early stages and that it is
going to work on different frequencies, layouts, and ‘contextually relevant
placements’ throughout the upcoming months.
Nonetheless, experts predict that we can expect some
backlash from this since Twitter users are generally resistant to change and
this decision will put more ads in their way, distracting them from the
discussion taking place.
Taking another approach, Falck said that this option could
facilitate direct monetization of tweets, since creators of a discussion
will be able to opt-in to these ads and get a cut of the resulting revenue.
This is in line with Twitter’s
broader plans to offer more incentives to keep its most popular users tweeting
more often.
