E-commerce: more ways to protect yourself

As advanced in a previous article, you must be careful when shopping from e-commerce websites for the holidays. Check out some more tips to protect yourself below.

Third-party apps or browser extensions
It might happen that you are tempted to use third-party apps or browser extensions since these allow you to make additional savings. Many of those are reputable and beneficial. However, there are some that may exploit customer information. As such, before installing any of the software, it is important to conduct a little research on them and that you understand the implications, both in terms of personal privacy and security.

Multi factor authentication
This is an additional safety tool that requires customers to provide another piece of information, apart from their login or password, to access an account or complete a transaction. For example, this may be a short passcode sent by text message. This is an extra layer of security that will deter unauthorised users from misusing your account. Several retailers are leveraging multi factor authentication to protect their clients.

Upgrade your devices
It is important to keep your computers and mobile devices updated and patched. This takes up a few minutes only and it will reduce the risk of your personal information being compromised by
malware when shopping online.
