With the increase in e-commerce, retailers
are having to find more strategies to speed up the way they process and fulfill
orders. One way to do so is by automation. It is expected that for the
end-of-year festivities, robots are going to play a bigger part in warehouses.
This is a huge advantage since merchants have been
struggling to meet the demands for workers in a tight labour market. In
contrast, smarter robots can help out since they can adapt to the
chaotic conditions of a warehouse more easily. How did things work
traditionally? When you place an online order, the product is physically picked
and packed in fulfillment centres. This is a job is that usually done by
humans. This might seem monotonous but the environment in a warehouse can be
pretty unpredictable, not to mention the varied nature of different types of
goods. That is why, for a long time, this part of the e-commerce journey has
been considered to be un-automatable.
However, we should not forget the fact that brick and
mortars are having trouble finding enough workers to fulfill their orders,
which is a huge issue since an increasing number of operations are being held
online. As such, they are being forced to turn towards automation.
