As advanced in a previous article, retailers are
having difficulty finding workers to process orders and this is proving to be a
huge issue since e-commerce is now booming! A solution to this problem
is to turn towards automation, such as using smart robots in warehouses.
Indeed, many retailers are using robotics solutions
to be able to keep up with their existing orders and to cater to the increase
that is expected to happen during the holiday season. One example of a
technology that is being leveraged by merchants is the Nimble robots.
Why these machines? The robotics company equipped
the devices with computer vision-enabled AI. Moreover, it has enlisted the
assistance of human helpers so that the robots are properly trained on how to
pick and pack a wide variety of e-commerce goods. The founder and CEO of the
firm advanced that they have leveraged an algorithm called imitation
learning. This involves using a human to remotely operate a machine to
accomplish a certain task over and over again until it learns to do it on its
own.
Thanks to its subscription model of charging
customers per goods picked and a hybrid approach, Nimble makes it easier for e-commerce merchants to
integrate automation in warehouses without substantial upfront costs.
