Mobile app: UK Post Office uses biometrics

With the digital world taking over several aspects of our life, the UK Post Office has decided to innovate and enhance its mobile app. Now, 10,500 of its 11,500 branches will allow people to pick up parcels using biometrics.

The system that is being used is called Post Office EasyID and it was developed by Yoti. To benefit from this tech, users just have to download the application, which is free-to-use. Then, they need to scan a physical credential, such as their passport or driving licence, and their own face for matching via facial recognition. This will create a secure ID that can be used on their smartphone in Post Offices for collecting parcels.

They just have to open the application and show it to a staff member, just like they would if a physical credential was involved. However, in contrast to a document, users can control what personal data is shown on the screen.

This recognition tech is expected to be used in 25,000 outlets more to prove identity or age. As such, it can also be utilised when purchasing protected products such as lottery tickets and medicines. According to a press release, the Yoti ID app can also be used to prove identity when processing online transactions.
