The UK fashion giant Primark has always focused
on physical retail solely even if most firms have adopted e-commerce. Online
shopping is growing at a very rapid rate in the US as well. Despite that, the
retailer has decided to increase its store count by a third in the country.
Its parent company Associated British Foods Plc
advanced that it plans to raise its store total to 530 across the globe over
the next five years. Currently, this number is 398. A huge part of this
expansion will be in the United States. This market has always been a very
competitive one, especially for British retailers. For instance, a while back,
Tesco, the largest grocer in the UK, attempted to open a chain called Fresh
& Easy in California. However, all outlets were closed by 2013.
Nonetheless, Primark is doing quite well in the northeast
and midwest states and Florida. Currently, the fashion giant has 13
locations in the US and it plans to increase this number to 60 within the next
five years.
With regards to e-commerce, the firm does not intend
to open an online store. However, it is upgrading its website to display more
of its clothing range and to provide customers with information on stocks
available in Primark outlets.
