Mobile app outage leaves Tesla owners powerless

On the 26th of November, Tesla owners found themselves in a difficult position. They were unable to connect to their mobile app. Initially, this problem was reported in the US and in Canada, but soon it expanded to the European and Asian markets and to other regions of the world.

What exactly is the purpose of the application? It gives Tesla owners the opportunity to start their vehicle, to access several controls, to schedule maintenance or assistance or even to manage vehicle charging. As such, being unable to use the app is a huge inconvenience since people will be left without any power to do anything until connectivity is restored. It should be noted that owners may also access all of these functionalities, regardless of the app status, via the vehicle’s key card or fob if they carry those around. However, those accustomed to the app may not have those with them.

Consumers took to social media to complain about this issue. An EV reporter from Seoul tweeted Tesla and Musk directly and after several hundreds of retweets, the latter responded saying that he was looking into the matter personally.

To avoid this from happening again, Tesla owners can carry their key card or fob around or they can ensure that their smartphone can still be used as a key via the car’s Bluetooth connection.
