Retail: Swansea sees the opening of a ‘pay as you feel’ shop

Some families have been hit pretty hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Many have lost their job and a large number of people are now struggling financially. Thus, the retail sector is innovating to be able to help these customers out. For instance, Swansea will soon see the opening of a ‘pay as you feel’ shop.

The concept is quite self-explanatory. Shoppers will have the opportunity to pick up bags of groceries and pay only what are able to afford for them. The shop will open at Clase Primary School in Rheidol Avenue in Clase on the 12th of January. This scheme is known as Big Bocs Bwyd - Welsh for “Big Food Box”. There are nine of these across South Wales and they were the blueprint for the Swansea outlet, which will be the first in the area.

The project was set up by the Welsh Government in partnership with FareShare Cymru. Daniel Jones, who is in the leadership team, said that they were able to receive £20,000 from the Waterloo Foundation, a charity which focuses on sustainability, the environment and primary education, for the shop. Moreover, they managed to obtain another £15,000 of funding and landscape around the area of shipping containers. These were converted into a shop space, which also features a patio, table and chairs, so that it is more accessible.
