According to
statistics, billions of dollars of unwanted clothing bought online are returned
by consumers every year. A research by an artificial
intelligence start-up revealed that $62.4 billion worth of products were
sent back across the world in 2015. This is a huge concern for retailers.
Thankfully, technology offers a solution to address this issue.
First of all, AI can help buyers by providing them with suggestions
based on their data. As such, they will be less likely to purchase an item that
will not fit them. Moreover, this would benefit sellers as an efficient system
would pick the most popular products which will attract customers. Secondly, augmented reality enable shoppers to see
how the clothes would look on them. They do not have to place huge orders just
to find the right fit. AR can also help clients buy glasses and shoes. They can
virtually try the items before purchasing them.
Jo Allison, consumer behavioural analyst at Canvas8,
a market researcher, advances that “unlike other goods, buying clothes online
continues to be marred by consumer hesitation”. She says that most customers
are afraid of not receiving what they envisioned and this impedes on the growth
of sales. However, with technologies such as artificial
intelligence and augmented reality, consumers can shop online more
confidently.
